If you’re heading to Lake Powell, it’s easy to find. The lake is located in the Glen Canyon National Recreational Area of northern Arizona and southern Utah, straddling the border between both states. It’s named for explorer John Wesley Powell, a one-armed Civil War veteran who surveyed the area in 1869.

The reservoir was created by building Glen Canyon Dam on the Colorado River near Page, Arizona. Construction began in 1956 and was completed ten years later at a cost of $375 million (which would be over $5 billion today). The dam impounds Lake Powell, which covers 186 miles of shoreline along with several hundred miles more upstream above various canyons where water levels are controlled by dams or gates.
